Sofia

Sofia,
the Bulgarian capital city is one of the oldest capital cities in
Europe and can trace it’s roots back 7,000 years ago. Today,
Sofia has a population of 1.1m people and like all capital cities
is a cosmopolitan city and the hub of the country's political, business
and cultural life.
There are many theatres, an Opera, an Operetta, concert halls,
cinemas, museums and galleries. One of the largest multiplex cinema/entertainment
complexes in Europe has recently opened and in addition, Sofia Land,
a large fun park is a major draw for the people of Sofia.
Sofia is modernizing rapidly and the Government has invested substantial
sums into the capital in recent years to improve the life of the
people. Electric trams and buses and a new underground system would
be the envy of many cities in the UK and Ireland. Taxis are very
cheap to travel around and also, a very safe way to travel.
There is a wide selection of restaurants in Sofia catering for
every palette. As well as Bulgarian food, you will find Italian,
Chinese, Indian, and Mexican. Expect, in general to pay in the region
of 5-7 Euro for a main course.
Bulgarian wine is a well kept secret, but we feel, not for long.
Quality of the red and white is very good. Expect to pay 7-10 Euro
for a bottle in a restaurant.
Cafe society is alive and well in Sofia with a coffee shop on every
street. The locals like nothing better than to sit and chat over
a coffee or beer.
There are 6 Irish Bars in Sofia and are some of the most expensive
bars in the city, but, still cheap by UK and Ireland standards.
However, you will never miss you Premier League Football or International
Rugby match, as all are shown live - try our favorite JJ Murphy's.
Hotels vary in price and quality. You can go for the Sheartons
or SAS Radissons at 150-200 Euro a night. Also, the local hotels,
like the Rodina, for 50-70 Euro a night. Cheaper hotels can also
be found in the 30 Euro range.
An option might be to consider Self Catering Apartments. These generally
work out form 35-50 Euro a night for the apartment and are a great
option, as long as you don't crave your hotel comforts
Shopping in Sofia is as good as any other city in Europe with many
of the multinationals moving in to Sofia within the past 3 years.
Jewellery, religious art, art in general are all great value. Markets
are very popular and are open seven days.
Unlike other capital cities in Europe, Sofia lacks a river as a
main focus point. However, it makes up for it in the easy going
and relaxed nature of the people.
